Become a Registered Emissions Repair Facility
Benefits of Becoming a Registered Emissions Repair Facility (Registered Shop)
If the majority of your business is devoted to repairing private passenger vehicles, there are a number of advantages to becoming a Registered Shop:
High Visibility
When a vehicle fails its emissions tests, Massachusetts Vehicle Check strongly encourages motorists to use Registered Shops. A list of nearby Registered Shops is displayed on the Vehicle Inspection Report (VIR) of failing vehicles. Motorists can also search online for Registered Shops.
Training
We offer Registered Emissions Repair Technicians (Registered Techs) specialized training related to emissions repairs and program requirements.
Exclusivity
Only repairs made by a Registered Tech count toward an emissions Waiver and only repair estimates provided by Registered Techs allow motorists to qualify their vehicles for an Economic Hardship Failure Repair Extension.
MAC Priority
Registered Shops get priority access to Motorist Assistance Centers (MACs) across the state. MAC staff are ready to help Registered Techs diagnose vehicles that have problems passing emissions tests.
Marketing
Registered Shops may display special signs with their qualifications to perform emissions repairs and, as part of the registration process, create their own 100-character taglines, including the types of vehicles they repair and any other specialties. We include these taglines in Registered Shops’ listings on VIRs and the program website.
Repair Forum
The program website links to an online repair forum where Repair Techs can share knowledge and experiences on a wide range of topics and issues related to the inspection and repair process. It is a full-featured blog that will allow users to search for case-studies of vehicle issues, repair strategies, and other topics of interest. Opus Repair Techs will also be continually posting content of interest, such as new training opportunities, Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs), service campaigns, and emissions and safety recalls..
Repair facilities specializing in commercial vehicles do not need to register, since waivers are not issued for those vehicles.
